Valentines Day is a time to honor love and affection. The trappings of Valentines' Day include flowers and cards, but the emotion behind the gifts is what the day is really all about.
Valentines Day started with a pagan festival in Rome. Young men would select the names of young ladies from a box to be their companion for a year. Over time the festival changed, and finally the festival was replaced by a day in honor of a St. Valentine who broke the law hundreds of years before when he married soldiers in secret as they were not allowed to get married by law. His love also performed miracles on a blind girl, but ultimately he was killed for his faith. His final words... "From your Valentine..." |
